We bring people together to recover histories, care for meaningful places, and make community stories accessible to future generations.

Our current featured work is at Historic Richland Cemetery in Greenville, South Carolina.

Established in 1884, Richland is the resting place of generations of African American Greenvillians. Some original cemetery records were lost to fire, leaving families and researchers with gaps in the history of the people buried there.

Leatherwood MATTERS is working to document the cemetery, recover personal and family histories, and connect discoveries to their sources. The work aims to help descendants, researchers, and visitors learn about the people and stories connected to Richland.
